Chinese New Year- STUBC Week 7

Chinese New Year is a day where people celebrate the beginning of the new year on a traditional Chinese calendar. This is a time for the Chinese to congratulate each other and themselves on having passed through another year.  Chinese new year lasts for 23 days, ending on the 15th day on the first lunar month..

On Chinese new year, my family all gather up and my grandparents place to have a giant dinner where we usually have duck, roast pork and other traditional Chinese food. This is important because this is one of the few times the whole family will get together every year.

Usually, the elders will give the younger a red envelope, containing money of any value, but never 4, 40 or 400 because in Cantonese, the number 4 sounds the same as death in Cantonese so it is considered as unlucky. Red envelopes are given as a good luck charm for the year and you should never spend it it gets rid of that luck.

  1. Hello, Jordan. I really like your blog, but have some questions. So I was wondering what does the 4 in your name mean. Also, if 4 means death, why would you put it in your name.

    1. thank you for your comment! i used the number 4 in my name as i wasn’t using it in a Cantonese sense, only in a English sense as a way to replace the letter A, but thanks for your comment
